Dr. Joshua Maxwell
Plano Dentist Joshua MaxwellHello, I am Dr. Joshua F. Maxwell at ImageCare Dental Group. Let me tell you a little about myself. I was raised in Dallas, Texas. Growing up I always loved sports. I started playing football and baseball at 6 years old. Before I began playing sports, I was a pretty quite child. I remember I would spend hours by myself listening children’s stories on our old record player or reading. I was very reserved until I started playing football. The coach used to tell my mom that I needed to get more aggressive, or I was going to get hurt. Mom had a pep talk with me, and I promised that I would listen to the coach and try harder to get more aggressive. Over time I found that I really enjoyed football; especially, when I realized that I was not going to really hurt anyone. Afterwards I ended up being one of the most competitive players on the team, and really came out of my shell. I fell in love with baseball too. One of my most fantastic memories of my teen years was winning the little league championship with my stepdad as coach. Good stuff!!!

I attended R. L. Turner High School in Farmers Branch, Texas. Unfortunately I did not get my dad’s height; rather, I took after my short Italian mother, so by the time I entered high school I wasn’t quite big enough to be the football “superstar” anymore. Baseball became my only athletic focus. I would spend hours at the batting cages perfecting my swing. One night the baseball coach from a local Christian college preparatory school approached me at the batting cages, and offered me a scholarship to play baseball for them. According to him, I would also be provided with the best possible academic college preparation. I accepted; especially, after facing the realization that the odds were not in my favor that I’d become a professional athlete. I began to seriously focus on college preparation. We put together a fantastic team and won the state championship in baseball 2 years in a row! As a bonus, since the school was much smaller, I was also able to play football again! My senior year we also won the state championship in football as well, and by the time I finished school I had earned a few academic scholarships for college.

footballOne of the proudest moments of my life was getting accepted into Texas A&M University. I began my freshman year in the Corps of Cadets in 1990. Our family hit some very difficult financial times which made it impossible for them to cover tuition, room and board. Although I was devastated, it may have happened for the best. I decided I would find a way to pay for college myself. It built character and taught me to be self-reliant. I had to quit the Corps of Cadets, and began to commute to my home in Dallas to mow lawns in the summer and on the weekends. As time progressed, this routine turned out to be a bit more demanding than I had anticipated as the business grew, but I persevered. Mowing lawns turned out to be a great way to make enough money to pay for college! It also taught me one of the most valuable lessons I have learned: treat everyone like family, and everything will work out!

My lawn service began to grow by leaps and bounds, until it reached a critical mass my senior year. I had earned an opportunity to install a 4 acre irrigation system, as well as the landscaping, lawn and trees for a large corporation. In addition, I was offered the maintenance contract for all 40 of their other locations. Needless to say, it was no longer possible to manage college and the business successfully. Therefore, I decided to take a hiatus from school for a while, and grow my business.

Little LeagueI ran my business for 12 years, and it eventually evolved into a small corporation. In the meantime, I also got married and had 2 children! The business ended up serving its’ original purpose by paying for college at the University of North Texas for my Bachelors of Science in biology and chemistry, where I graduated with magna cum laude honors and a 4.0 average. It also made dental school at Baylor College of Dentistry possible, where I attended on 2 partial scholarships from Baylor. Even though the business has been shut down for years, I find some of the most valuable lessons and wisdom I have picked up came from running my business. I really feel like I can identify and relate to just about anyone.

Dentistry has been absolutely the most enjoyable profession. It is an absolute perfect fit for me! I have always loved to work with my hands, so dentistry comes very natural to me. I have always also been extremely detail conscious with an appreciation for an artistic touch. One of the most rewarding experiences in dentistry is seeing the pure emotion of the patient when you have literally changed their life by transforming their smile. I will never forget the patient that told me that he felt like he could smile for the first time in his life! Of course there is also nothing better than seeing an emergency tooth ache patient that has not been able to sleep for days, and within an hour they are completely out of pain! Dentistry is just a bit like pure magic!

Dr. Maxwell and his boysI really enjoy my wonderful career in dentistry in which I can spend lots of time with my two children, Sterling and Aris. My two boys are the most important part of my life. We lost their mother to breast cancer when she was only 31 years old, so they really need the extra time with dad. I love working at ImageCare because we are like one big family in which there is an understanding that our families and home life always comes first. We also make it a goal to treat all patients like they are our own dad, brother, mother, sister, or children.

Like I said before, if you treat everyone like family, then everything seems to work out for the best!
