When I started using magnification “loupes” years ago I found that they greatly enhanced my practice of dentistry in that I could not only see clearer but my posture improved as well. What’s more, they helped me work better. I first tried glasses with a magnification that helped me see teeth 2.4 times larger. There was an initial adjustment with this radical new technology but every day became easier and I eventually adjusted to using them. Several months later I moved on to a new pair of glasses with an increased magnification 3.3 times that of normal vision. Once I became used to them, they greatly improved my vision and performance as a dentist. A few years ago I upgraded once more to a pair of loupes that magnified up to 4.8 times a normal eye’s view. They also featured a bright xeon light that could be focused directly onto a specific work area. Needless to say the outcome was astonishing! Now, each time I work on a specific tooth, it appears five times its normal size plus it is clearly lit. I can not only see better but my work has improved. The increased magnification allows me to diagnose conditions I may have not seen prior to using the glasses. Less invasive treatments can also be utilized due to my ability to more easily view and remove decay without having to get too near to healthy teeth. Utilizing minimally invasive procedures or, microdentistry is increasingly more possible when dentists’ can see more clearly. This is indeed an incredible development for both dentists and their patients! I hope you are pleased to learn that you are seeing a dentist who utilizes magnification. It indicates an interest in seeing your mouth better and subsequently, providing you with better care. Coming from a dentist, I would never let a dentist work on me without experience using loupes with an attached xeon light!
