If you are considering orthodontic treatment, you are most likely already aware of the numerous benefits Invisalign can offer. These custom, clear, removable trays can straighten the teeth discreetly without the use of metal brackets or wires.

Here, we explore the Invisalign treatment timeline, so you can determine if this revolutionary orthodontic treatment may be right for you.

Your Invisalign Consultation

Prior to beginning Invisalign, our doctors must see you for an initial consultation. During this visit, we will discuss your medical history and dental goals with you in detail.

Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment must be in good oral and overall health. Therefore, a thorough oral assessment will be performed to make sure you are free of gum disease and tooth decay. X-rays and scans may also be taken to evaluate the positions of the tooth roots and examine the health of the underlying jawbone.

Most orthodontic issues can be addressed with Invisalign. Whether you have gapped, crooked, rotated, or overlapped teeth, this alternative treatment can offer many advantages. In some severe cases, traditional orthodontic treatment may be recommended to preserve optimal oral health. Our doctors can help you determine if Invisalign will be effective for your situation.

Creating Your Personalized Treatment Plan

If our doctors determine you are a candidate, we will take impressions of your teeth. These impressions will be sent to the Invisalign lab, where a skilled technician will craft your aligner trays.

Working closely with the lab, your doctor will map out a custom treatment plan to move your teeth gently and strategically. Once the Invisalign trays are fabricated, they will be shipped to our office.

Wearing Your Invisalign Trays

When we receive your aligner trays, we will schedule an appointment so you can try on the first set. If the fit is appropriate, your treatment can begin immediately.

You will wear the trays for at least 22 hours every day. They should only be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

Our doctors will inform you when to change out the current trays for the next ones in the series. In most cases, a new set can be worn approximately every two weeks. The minor differences in the trays will help your teeth move safely, according to plan. You will see us about every six weeks so your progress can be monitored.

One of the most attractive advantages of Invisalign is the fact that the trays are removable. Patients can remove the aligners to attend special events, such as weddings, birthdays, and graduations. However, it is important to understand this should only be done occasionally.

The success of Invisalign treatment is largely dependent on the compliance of the patient. Wearing your trays for the appropriate amount of time will help you experience a smooth and successful treatment.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

The length of Invisalign treatment can vary significantly depending on the individual needs of the patient. Generally, orthodontic treatment using Invisalign can be completed in about 18 to 24 months, which is comparable to traditional braces. Patients with mild cases of misalignment may be able to complete their treatment in as little as six months.
