The Benefits of Dental Crowns

Improved Oral Health

Dental crowns add strength and reinforcement to decayed, damaged, or broken teeth, reducing the risk of future problems.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Dental crowns can also be used to address cosmetic issues, including chipping, misshapen teeth, and deep discoloration.

Long-Lasting Results

Made from high-quality dental materials, crowns can last up to 15 years with proper care – even longer in some cases.

What kinds of dental crowns are used in dentistry?

Types of Dental Crowns

Temporary Crowns

Temporary crowns are typically made from a composite resin or acrylic material. A temporary crown is intended for short-term use while the dental lab creates your permanent crown.

Same-Day Crowns

In some cases, we can use our iTero® digital scanner and CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology to create in-office, same-day crowns in a single appointment for your convenience.

Porcelain Crowns

Unlike temporary crowns, these permanent crowns are made from porcelain and mimic the natural translucency of dental enamel. They are often placed on front teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer both optimal strength and aesthetics. Porcelain is baked onto a strong metal substructure for maximum resilience.

Implant-Supported Crowns

Instead of covering teeth, these crowns are attached to dental implants. They are usually placed a few months after implant placement, after full healing has occurred.

Dental Crown Candidacy

To qualify for this type of treatment, patients must be free from gum disease, as this condition can impede the long-term success of your restoration. Furthermore, individuals should have a full understanding of the treatment process and realistic expectations of outcomes. Dental crowns are often a wonderful solution for patients with:

  • Moderate to severe tooth decay
  • Enough healthy natural tooth structure to support a restoration
  • Broken, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Missing teeth (in the case of implant-supported crowns)
  • Cosmetic concerns, such as chips, cracks, or discoloration

Treatment Timeline

Placement of a dental crown can be completed in one or two visits, depending on your specific needs. Here are the basic steps you can expect during treatment at our Plano dentistry practice.
If you opt for a same-day crown, our milling machine can produce a custom-designed crown in less than an hour.
If you opt for a same-day crown, our milling machine can produce a custom-designed crown in less than an hour.

To determine the extent of damage, one of our dentists will take digital x-rays of the affected teeth. This helps determine if the decay or infection has spread to adjacent teeth and confirms whether or not dental crowns are the most appropriate treatment option.

Your dentist will remove any decayed or damaged portions of the tooth structure. If necessary, we will remove infected tissue through root canal therapy. Next, we will carefully and conservatively remove small amounts of enamel. This creates a solid foundation for your new restoration.

After tooth preparation, your Plano dentist will take impressions of your prepared tooth. At our practice, we use a handheld wand to digitally capture these images.

Crown Fabrication

If you opt for a same-day crown, we can upload these images directly to our milling machine, which can produce a custom-designed crown in less than an hour. Otherwise, we will send your impressions to our in-house lab, where a skilled ceramist combines layers of porcelain to achieve the right look. This process can take a few weeks.

Final Placement

Patients who choose a same-day crown can receive their cap during that very same appointment. If you decide on a traditional crown manufacturing process, we will schedule you for another visit for placement. Before attaching the cap, our dentist will assess its fit, color, and appearance. We will then remove any temporary restoration and replace it with your permanent crown. Before cementing the crown in place, we will always allow you to take a look in the mirror and make sure you approve of your new smile.
